Copy Editing
Proofreading
Proofreading includes checking your writing for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Your content in the form of articles, newsletters, blog posts, journal articles, magazines, newspapers, and more are cleaned up and made ready for publication.
Word Consistency
Your writing is reviewed for consistency in word choice, tone, voice, verb tense, and the like. This allows your work to feel cohesive and makes more sense to the reader.
Style & Layout
Copy editing for style and layout allows your writing to be formatted in a way that is pleasing for readers and makes sense based on the published format of your work.
Fact Checking & Rewrites
I audit and research your statements, quotes, statistics, and the like for accuracy and document credible sources for your information.
Book Editing
Five Major Types of Book Editing
There are 5 major types of book editing available to authors. Here is a list of the types of book editing:
-
- Developmental, substantive, or content editing
- Structural editing
- Copy editing
- Line editing
- Mechanical editing
Developmental, Substantive, and Content editing looks at your work from a big picture lens. It ensures that the content makes sense, that it flows well, and that the ideas are clearly articulated and developed.
Structural editing is often part of Content editing and focuses on the way that the information is organized. Are the ideas or the story presented in a way that makes sense and is logical and easy to understand? This is the major question for structural editing.
Copy Editing
Copy Editing is covered in detail above in the first service that I provide on this page. It is the core of editing that most people think of and includes grammar, punctuation, spelling, and more. View the details of copy editing here.
Line Editing
Line editing is copy editing on a line-by-line basis. Line editors look for run-on sentences, cliche or trite sayings, and helps the author to simplify the writing.
Mechanical Editing
Mechanical editing ensures that your content meets the structural requirements of the destination publishing format. For example, if you are writing a paper for an academic journal, your mechanical editor will ensure that your work follows all of the rules of the appropriate style guide for academic papers (APA, MLA, Chicago).
When you are writing a book, the content must include very specific sections and elements on the front and back covers in order to be sold online or organized in a library. In addition, your hard copy publisher may have very specific format specifications to ensure a clean print run for your book. Your mechanical book editor will take care of all of these things.
Sensitivity Reading
What is Sensitivity Reading?
Sensitivity reading is also known as cultural consulting and diversity editing. These editors read content looking at the writing through a culturally sensitive lens. They are looking for information within the content that may be biased and based on a worldview that does not include the real-to-life experience of a population of people different from the author.
For example, a sensitivity reader may be an expert (from lived experience, not academic study) on a diverse racial group, a feminist perspective, a disability, or an alternative gender identity. These editors will read your material to help you rewrite parts of your content that may be experienced as offensive, insensitive, or inaccurate to members of the diverse group the author is writing about.
My Sensitivity Reading Offers
I offer Sensitivity Reading packages based on the size of the material being reviewed. Here is the list of deliverables from my sensitivity readings:
-
- A report on the passages that require rewrites
- Suggested rewrites
- Explanation of the reason for the suggested rewrites
- References to illustrate and demonstrate precedence for the concern being addressed
The different package sizes come with appropriate turnaround times and fixed fees.
