The fantasy of Japan often includes pictures of cherry blossoms, pagodas, zen monasteries, and ninjas. The reality of Japan is much more complex. And like any well-developed society, it has a dominant culture and innumerable subcultures living side-by-side, overlapping, and entwining with each other in layers and layers of rich and unforgettable experiences.
